What’s a good “square 1″ for an I.T career?

For someone who knows only that they would do better in I.T than any other field, with just basic knowledge of hardware and software, and no tertiary education, were is the best place to set my target for a job/career or starting point in the I.T industry as soon as possible?

more information…..
Its not that I won’t settling for something like a call centre or artisan trade because either way i am going to need another job very soon and although i am applying for anything available. I would just like to have an idea of what skills and knowledge i should focus on in the time being in the event that there is an opening in field of work that I would like to be involved in. So far the best idea I have is data-capturing, but if you have other ideas please advise me as I don’t know if 35wpm is sufficient to start with and I don’t know if I can improve it in a matter of about three months. in the mean time I’ll keep researching but if you’re in the I.T industry or know something about it to help me decide please let me know.

I’m sad because I don’t have a clear career path?

I lean towards music, dance and acting but because of a few circumstances and low budget I haveto work in a call center which I hate, I was thinking to study software engineering but it’ll be the same thing, I’d still end up working for a company, earning a paycheck to paycheck no matter how high is the income, plus I’ve heard that people who work lots of hours in front of a computer tend to be more suicidal and that the they are prone to have weaker health.

I’m a bit confused and I don’t want to waste anymore time, today’s situation makes me lean to something more secure, but I also feel like daring to follow my instict and path in life, I don’t want to be miserable all my life just to feel secure of something…

Please help.

Thank you.
