When entrusting the local daycare center, nursery or playgroup with your precious child, it is understandable that parents may be concerned. A parent can be worried that their child will not receive the same love, care, and attention that they receive at home. A parent might also be concerned with the safety of the daycare’s play equipment and resting facilities.

Although it is normal to be nervous, with some tips in what to look out for when selecting a daycare center a parent can entrust their child in the daycare’s care without real reason for concern.

1. Hygiene –

There are usually many children who play, eat and sleep in the daycare center, for many hours a day. This can lead to the spreading of many germs. Especially as the children are usually too young to be able to practice proper hygiene and are unable to wash their hands with soap, on their own. A parent should inquire as to what the daycare’s cleanliness schedule is. Do they use disposable liners on the changing tables? Do they wash the children’s hands with soap before they eat? Do they disinfect the tables, chairs and toys periodically? These are important question to look out for when inspecting the center.

2. Separation Anxiety –

It is both normal and accepted for children to have a hard time being away from their parents for the first time. A parent understands that it is necessary and healthy for the child to develop independence. However, the parent does not want the child to cry for the six hours that he/she is left alone. Find out what their procedure is in helping the children “break-in” to the new schedule. Do they let the children cry? Do they have treats they provide? Do they call the parents for assistance?

 3. Toy and Furniture Safety-

It is a parent’s primary concern that their child be safe and healthy at all times. While the child is away they spend many hours a day playing with toys. There are many toys that can be dangerous or hazardous for young children. A parent should inspect the play center to ensure that there are no toys with small pieces that can pose as a choking hazard and all corners should be rounded off or padded. There are many companies such as Jonti-craft who make all their toys and furniture kid-friendly. For example: Their hinges run straight down the doors so it can’t pinch fingers. There is also a company Children’s Factory who makes hundreds of soft play items and furniture to provide children with safe playing time.

4. Discipline –

The discipline policy of the daycare center might be a concern to a parent. No loving parent wants their child to be disciplined in a harsher manner than necessary. Although the child might be very well-behaved, situations might arise during the day that requires discipline. Find out what their policy is. Do they hit the children? Do they withhold privileges? Are the children afraid of the staff? Select a warm, caring facility that will discipline with love and not out of anger.

5. Curriculum –

All children should begin to receive their education from an early age. Even infants will develop physically and cognitively if given the appropriate toys. Find out if the center provides educational toys for the children that will benefit their growth and development. There are many toy manufacturers such as Melissa and Doug who make great quality toys that are specially designed to promote children’s development at all stages. The child should constantly be challenged to strive and grow with the toys, art supplies, books and puzzles that the center provides.

Of course, the parent should constantly communicate with the center to make sure their child is well-adjusted and happy, but with a bit of pre-planning you can feel confident as you wave goodbye to your child on their first day away from home.

Finding a Good Child Care Centre

Edit Article |

For parents of infants and toddlers, selecting from a list of reputable child care centres in Singapore may be a daunting task. It is a vital decision which troubles parents as child care centres are given the responsibility of enriching the life of the toddler while the parents are away for work. There are a variety of options available for parents who are looking for the best child care centres. Parents are advised to learn as much as they can with the variety of options available for them prior to finalizing on one.

Child care centres are licensed to handle groups of more than 5 children under seven years of age. In Singapore, these centres are monitored and regulated by the Ministry of Community Development, Youth and Sports or MCYS. This is different from kindergartens which are monitored by the Ministry of Education.

As compared to kindergartens, child care centres do not have a strict academic curriculum but revolves more on providing activities so children can take care of themselves. There are numerous sites which feature child care centres with recommendations from various other parents. One important consideration is that parents should make sure that the centre is licensed with the MCYS prior to making any final plans.

To better accommodate working parents, centres are required to be open from 7am in the morning until 7pm in the evening during weekdays and until 2pm in the afternoon during Saturdays. Centres are open for 6 days a week except for a few holidays. As these are open almost every day of the year, parents can choose when they can visit the centre with their child and see what it has to offer. Scheduling a meet will also allow parents to meet the staff and ask any vital questions.

Parents are advised to check the facilities and equipment on whether these are clean and safe for kids to use. As this will be similar to child’s second home, make sure that the rooms are conducive for activity, well lit and ventilated. Check the credentials of the staff as much as possible. Depending on the position, personnel are required to have a diploma as well as training in relation to child care and development. As these are only minimum requirements in Singapore, parents can also ask how long their staff have been looking after children. Take note of temperament with children, if they are patient and friendly with those in the centre. Another factor worth noting is the ratio between the staff and kids. For children between 30 months to 3 years of age, there should be at least 1 trained staff for every 12 kids.

Although child care centres are not focused on the academics, there are common types of curriculum being followed. Some of the more common include curriculum that are theme-based, Montessori techniques or learning through play. Parents can ask how the centre balances the activities enhancing the physical, mental, emotional and creative aspects of the child. Parents are advised to ask as many questions as they can that may feel more at ease when looking for child care centres.

Want To Open Your Own Child Care Center?

]]>

The one dilemma that parents face each day as they prepare for work is whether their child is receiving the absolute best care in their absence. They want to know their chosen daycare provides learning opportunities, healthy food and a fun environment. It’s with these considerations many leave their government jobs, administrative jobs and even their engineering careers to open their own daycare centers. Think you could provide exceptional child care in your own small business? A. Harrison Barnes, career coach and founder of Hound.com says it takes more than a love for children to open, operate and ensure a successful child care center. There are legalities and compliance issues that are required, as well as a good business plan. While not overwhelming, it is crucial these issues are addressed.

Questions you’ll need to ask yourself include:

Do I want a home-based child care center or should I lease/buy property?
Will I provide after school pick up services for school age children?
What ages will I allow? Infants younger than six weeks? Children older than ten?
What legal structure will I set my small business up as?
Is there a need for a child care center in my community?
How will I handle billing matters? How will I handle late payments?
What will my mission statement be?
Can I require employees to undergo drug testing? Polygraphs?
Where will I find my employees? How many will I need to hire?

You’ll also need to consider your business plan, management plan and training policies. There are many benefits to considering a training program. You’ll be able to assure parents of your capabilities and dedication, as well as those capabilities of your employees. Finally, there are those health considerations that will require a solid plan should they occur. Flu season always presents difficult logistics problems for child center owners. How will you handle those parents who drop off their sick children? Medications children take will also require a dispensing and safety procedure.

We might not be able to help you with the age parameters of the children, but when you’re ready to find qualified employment candidates in your area, we invite you to consider Hound.com. Many of the nation’s top employers find their talent with Hound.com. A. Harrison Barnes developed this unique job aggregation site to bring the best talent to those employers looking for the brightest, experienced and educated job seekers. And the best part? As an employer, you won’t be charged for your job listing. No ads, no subscription fees of any kind and access to those job candidates in your area – what could be better?

This leaves you to deal with the details of opening and operating your child care center without the stresses of finding the ideal job candidate. Before long, you’ll be a small business owner providing an invaluable solution to working parents in your community. That, for many, is the epitome of success.

With an increase in nuclear families and working mothers, the demand for child care centres has been on the rise. Cashing on this opportunity, child care or day care centres have mushroomed everywhere but not every centre is able to provide the best care facilities to your child. Remember that leaving your child in a child care centre is a difficult task as you may suffer from separation anxiety when your child is not within your sight all the time. The child care centre you choose to entrust your child in should make matters easy for both – you and the little one.

The child care centre atmosphere should be such that a child feels cared for and loved in the mother’s absence. Parents must do a proper study of child care centres in their area or around before zeroing in upon one. Talk to other parents who have used child care centres in the past. Ask questions about the facilities provided by the centre, safety measures adopted, first aid and transport facilities, how are the teachers/ care givers and attendants, do they feed and take care of the child’s hygiene etc. A child care centre should literally be a second home for your child; otherwise it can make a negative impact on the child’s psychology.

Check whether the centre has other children of your child’s age-group, visit the centres and compare facilities provided and the curriculum followed. Attend a class and see the children-teacher/ care giver ratio, interaction levels and so on. Make sure that whatever is being taught is age appropriate and challenging but fun for the child.

Once you have finalised upon a child care centre, take your child along and see how he/she reacts to the space. Initial distress is to be expected because it is a new environment for them but after a while, keep checking whether a child is returning home in a good mood and whether he/she has had meals and is clean and tidy. It is very important that along with fun and learning they eat and maintain a healthy living in a child care centre.

Most of the child care centres do have all the facilities, so finding one that’s most appropriate for your child could be challenging. That is why interacting with other parents and the centre staff is very important to check on the progress of other children as well as your child.

There is no need to get worried if your child takes more time to adjust compared to other children. Each child is different in parameters. But do check how the Centre deals with the adjustment period and whether they are active in settling the child. It is tremendously difficult for every parent to leave their child in another’s care. Child care centres do understand this and can try and ensure that saying bye to each-other does become easier with each passing day.

Is Your Child Safe in a Daycare Center?

Daycare centers are meant to provide children with time to enjoy themselves and learn at the same time. It is therefore important that all the materials used within the daycare center are safe. Daycare centers are usually painted with pretty and eye-catching colors and are decorated with modern style and designs to help stimulate the kids into interact with their surroundings. This is part of learning programs for kids and they will benefit from such stimulating surroundings, both mentally and emotionally. There are bulleting boards, activity chairs and tables, sleeping cots, safety mats, change stations, and other things that not only serve the needs of the children but also provide them with endless hours of fun and learning. But above their function as learning tools for children, these items must be safe and not pose health and injury hazards to the kids while they are inside the daycare center.

Exploration and doing experiments are part of the learning process of children. They explore their surroundings and by themselves, can be too adventurous for their own good. One way for them to know and recognize the different things that they encounter is to put them inside their mouths. For this reason, all items used by the children must be made of non-toxic materials. Additionally, they should be in such a size that the children will not choke on them. The daycare center management must make sure that the childrens toys are clean and should not be made of materials that can easily get dirty such as furry toys, which could pose a threat especially to children with asthma. Children must be grouped according to their age. This will facilitate identifying which toys or items are appropriate for their group, as well as help determine which type of activities match their age group. Large items such as bookcases must be made of durable materials. They should be secure properly and not tend to tip over with the slightest push.

The building where the daycare center is located must have passed inspection regarding the presence of dangerous substances such as lead, asbestos and radon. There should be no toxic chemicals such as cleaning liquids and pest killers that children could access. Medicines should be placed out of their reach and the staff should know how to protect children from injuries and possible illness. The should also have knowledge about first aid and CPR. Parents should make sure that information about poison control is posted conspicuously in the daycare center, and that they have an emergency plan for accidents involving the children, and other scenarios such as fire, flood, tornado, earthquake, blizzard or even a possible terrorist attack in the vicinity of the center.

The childrens safety should be a primary concern for everyone in the daycare center. There are many other health and safety concerns that parents and the management of the daycare center should pay much attention to. Although parents implicitly trust the center when they leave their kids there, they should not be complacent; rather they should proactively cooperate with the daycare center for the benefit of their children.
