i’m doing a speech for tomorrow. i need to know if flows well, can anyone help.?

The old man was in his seventies. He lived by himself in a small apartment. The furniture was shabby, the walls were damp. He did not live in good conditions. The man approached the telephone and dialed a number. He spoke, “Hello my dear son how are you. Yes, I’m very well. I had a slight headache this morning but now I feel much better. Yes, Yes of course don’t worry about me and don’t forget to call tomorrow. Goodbye” The man sat silent for a moment and then broke down weeping. There was indeed a telephone but no cable . The man could not afford a telephone connection. He was all alone and neglected by his family.

Today abuse of elders in not unheard of and about 8-15% of elderly citizens living in all countries have gone through some form of abuse. When living with their children they are denied facilities such as clothing, medical treatment or even food. Their personal belongings are seized and they are forced to hand over money or property. Some are driven out of their homes and made to look after themselves. Others who live in isolation suffer from loneliness, depression and are often in a state of financial crisis.
Other than mere neglect many elders go through many forms of abuse. The most fatal being psychological and physical abuse which can make their lives miserable . Elders are regularly insulted, put down, made to feel useless, or beaten, locked up and forced to work like slaves. Cases like these can be easily found.
Elders subjected to physical and psychological abuse develop symptoms such as dehydration, anxiety and malnutrition. They also become prone to many sicknesses. This kind of abuse severely damages an elderly person’s confidence, morale and character and can lead to insanity or suicide.
It has been proven that those who have gone through abuse have a shorter life expectancy than those who have not.

Do elders really deserve this? Should everyone sit back and do nothing. Well what can one do make their lives better. There are many ways in which everyone can help. If an elderly person lives next to your house and you notice symptoms of physical or psychological, abuse the right thing would be to inform the police or authorities before anything worse happens. In extra time, one could volunteer and help out at the local senior citizens centre. Here one could give them emotional support or even just talk to them. Seniors really appreciate it when others listen to them especially kids and teenagers. One could also volunteer to help those living alone by either mowing their lawn, doing some of their shopping, taking their pets out for walks or even just going over to keep them company. This would cheer them up and change their view on life.

Today’s generation has an obligation to look after its elderly. If we neglect them, abuse them, or even overlook their being abused, these deeds will come to haunt when we are old making us go through the same suffering from the hands our own loved ones.

Other than this elders go through many more forms of abuse. The most common of them being psychological and physical abuse.
Psychological abuse is when elders are regularly insulted, put down and made to feel useless..
The last and the most dangerous of all is physical abuse where physical harm is inflicted. Cases have been found where elders have been beaten regularly, locked up in rooms or made to work like slaves. Elders subjected to physical abuse develop symptoms such as dehydration, sores , malnutrition and become prone to many sicknesses. This can lead to insanity or suicide.
The abuse of elders can destroy a persons character and make them loose their will to live. It has been proven that those who have gone through abuse have a shorter life expectancy than those who have not.

We must look after our elders after all don’t we owe something to them?. If we neglect or abuse them, or even overlook their being abused when we are old this aspect will come to haunt us and we shall go through the same by the hands our own loved ones.

Secret money flows through election loophole

Secret money flows through election loophole
Michigan’s campaign finance laws are designed to let voters know whose money is trying to influence them. Yet it’s virtually impossible to tell where more than $4 million — nearly 40% — of the money spent on TV ads during the gubernatorial primary races came from.
