Going Green in the Data Center

With thousands of servers running throughout the day and night, data centers are notorious for consuming energy. As people are becoming more and more aware of the ever-increasing energy use, data centers are starting to find ways to lower their consumption.

Many companies are finding ways to make their data centers more energy efficient. One way of doing this is to use servers that shut down or idle when they’re not in use. By allowing servers to have idle time, you save energy and power when the server is not in use. The problem that comes along with this is that it takes about twice as much energy to power the server backup than it does to just let it run. So for this option to work you have to take into consideration the extra energy that will be used when the server needs to be accessed again.

One solution is to use the “80/20″ rule, where 20% of the servers will be accessed 80% of the time, and the remaining servers being accessed the rest of the time. In this case, a plausible solution is to have only the most used 20% of servers on all the time. And the remaining 80% will run with energy-efficient servers that have the ability to power down when they are not in use. This way, the data center still saves energy without interfering with access to the server.

Heat reduction is the area that eats up most of the energy in many data centers. It can be a difficult task to keep the room cool with so many servers generating heat. Data centers can go green by using energy-efficient cooling systems. Instead of using the traditional method of cooling the room with air conditioners, data centers can use water to cool the room.

Using water to cool the server rooms is much more efficient than air cooling because it can handle higher temperatures since water is more conductive of heat. Data centers are slow to implement this cooling system though, because of the potential problems it might cause within the data center. A small leak could do great damage to many of the servers. However, there are many systems available now that have been tested and are proven to be reliable.

Another idea that some people are throwing around for green cooling is using liquid metal to cool the racks. The benefit of this is that the metal can cool the servers without any moving parts and without the concerns of pumping water through the racks.

Other ways that data centers are implementing green solutions are by using on-site power generation using fuel cells, solar power, or by using direct-current wiring to lower electricity use. Collecting rainwater for toilet and landscaping, using non-volatile paints and using reflective materials to reduce heat absorption are some other techniques data centers are implementing to reduce costs and raise the overall efficiency of the building.

Energy consumption is rising exponentially and data centers are one of the leading consumers of energy throughout North America. With increased awareness to the problem of energy efficiency and over-consumption, it’s important that data centers implement as many techniques as they can to curb the amount of energy they use.

Need help with going back to college?

I just turned 25 and it was my wake call. I keep asking myself what are you going to do with your life. For the past 4 yrs I’ve been working at call center jobs and I hate them, but the problem I’m having is I have no idea what I want to do. I do have some college credits under by belt like speech and massage therapy. I love photography, art, computers, and the importance of helping people like a nurse or a doctor. However I’m not the sharpest tool in the shed when it comes to math. Anyone have any ideas that could help?

PLEASE TAKE THE TIME TO READ WHAT I HAVE TO SAY ABOUT THESE PEOPLE, IT WILL SAVE YOU THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS. First check out www.youtube.com and in the search box type in industry model and talent studios scam – there is a CBS news reort that happened less than 4 months ago!!!!

The way the company works is they send out “talent scouts” (mostly kids aged 18-21 who are looking for a part-time job) to various malls, movie theaters, and events throughout New York City, Connecticut, and New Jersey. These “scouts” are paid to stand at these locations!!!! AND they stop every single person they see who is with a child. They stop these people by saying something
like “excuse me mam, your son is so cute he has such beautiful eyes, have you ever considered getting him into acting or modeling?”. If you say no, they will continue to tell you how perfect your child is until you sign up. At this point when the person agrees to sign up, they fill out a card with
just basic contact information. The card then gets sent to a call center where the person will now receive a phone call from a representative who will attempt to set you up with an appointment at their office in Edgewater. When you make the appointment you will show up at the office and meet with someone who is actually a salesperson and this person will try to sell you “marketing tools” which are photos of you and your child and a spot on the company’s website which they say is looked at by various agency’s. This is BS!!!!! They never provide you with you is looking at your site!

This is the part that is the REAL SCAM….When you are initially stopped by the scout, if you ask the scout if there’s any cost to sign up he/she will say “no it is entirely free”. THIS IS A LIE!!!!! They will charge you anywhere from $500-$3,000 just to take pictures of your child to complete the portfolio. The thing is, many people fall into the trap and pay this crazy amount of money to Industry Model and Talent Studios and then…….THEY NEVER GET A CALL BACK, THEY GET NO WORK!!!!! THEY WASTED THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS!!!!!

A legitimate modeling agency would not ask you for money, they would pay for your portfolio and take a percentage of what you make for themselves. Oh yeah I should mention that Industry
Model and Talent Studios admits they are not an agency!!!

Once you go to your meeting with the salesperson and pay these people money you also sign a contract. The contract is very carefully written, they have lawyers present at all of their meetings to ensure that everything they do is technically legal and people can not get a refund if they are unhappy with the service. IT MAY BE LEGAL BUT IT IS NOT ETHICAL and this is how they keep your money!

The company operates under different names since so many people are now aware of the scam. They operate as Industry Model & Talent Studios in New Jersey,
NewFaces in Hicksville, New York,
InterFACE in CT, and
iTalent in other various places. Look at how similar their websites are….

Norway’s center-left government has issued a warning to 140 companies that still don’t have enough women on their boards of directors: Appoint more, or be dissolved.

Companies organized as “ASA” corporations are required to meet a state-mandated quota that calls for 40 percent of their directors to be women.

The quota was ushered in during the previous center-right government coalition, and has been enthusiastically embraced by the current Labour Party-led government.

Equality minister Karita Bekkemellem told newspaper Aftenposten on Friday that those companies failing to meet the quota will face involuntary dissolution from January 1. Many are within traditionally male-oriented branches like the offshore oil industry, shipping and finance.

Several female reps have been lying to their supervisor about their reasons for taking family leave. Possible violation of federal law. What steps are you going to take to curb this practice?

Your boss has asked for a Department Report on call center problems and possible solutions. As the new VP, you will make a presentation to management stating the problems, possible causes and offered solutions. Approved new policies will go in to effect the following week.

How do you handle going to a job you hate?

I hate my job. I went into this job under the advice of the HR manager. She recommended I get a job in customer service call center to move up in my company. I would have to stay in this job for a year and its been 3 months and I am just fed up. I work in the web support area which means I help people navigate the site and use online tools. I work for a health insurance company. The site goes down daily and I get yelled at and the pay for this is rediculous!! I can’t even enjoy my weekends without thinking of this job or enjoy my evenings when I get off everyday!! I want to quit so badly, but need the income for paying my rent and bills..I have applied so many places and no luck. It s-cks you go to college and can’t even get a job!! I feel trapped. I get depressed when I think of going to that job every morning. The thought of quitting is comforting to me. I was thinking of quitting and taking a small loan until I found another job to support me for the time..what do you think?
