Do people who work at call centers in India really make a substantial living?

I wonder because whenever I need to contact someone for a product or service it seems that they must be in India! I get some language barriers and it drives me crazy and I have trouble understanding some of the people who are taking my calls! (No offense to people in India, it’s an outsourcing problem our nation has developed…)

do call centres go out of their way to employ people that cant be understood?

Why do british companies use call centres abroad where the people you try to talk to can barely speak english?
