Am I a bad person for taking my wife’s cat and tossing it out down the road?
Let the bleeding heart people start flaming me, but here’s the story.
My pregnant wife of 1 year has had this cat, and it has seriously been a menace to me. We got a house together, and she brought this cat who has constantly peed on all of my belongings. Furniture, rugs, and he even goes on my side of the closet and pees on my clothes.
About 6 months ago I told my wife HE HAS GOT TO GO. She agreed (since i’m sure she’s tired of washing the pee of of stuff), but she didn’t want to get rid of him to just anyone. She put out face book bulletins, but never really made the initiative. I took it upon myself and tried calling all of the “No Kill’ shelters, but alas, they were over capacity. I tried telling her time, and time again to just put an add on Craigslist, etc, but she didn’t want to give it away to someone she didn’t know. She agreed that it was a huge annoyance… especially now that (at the time) she was 12 weeks pregant… (I dont want my baby crawling in cat pee!)
Finally the straw that broke the camal’s back. Last month on our 1 year anniversary we took a trip to Lake Tahoe. Everything was great until I realized the cat peed on everything in MY checked baggage.
I didn’t whine, or complain at all. I washed my clothes, clean out my laptop keyboard, MP3 player, and washed all of my clothes, and went on about my business. (My wife was amazed I took it so well).
The night we flew back into town (Florida) I waited for her to go to sleep, and I put the cat in a pillow case and drove about 10 miles away, and dropped him off in the center of an 55+ subdivision. (I figured some old person would want it – right?)
I told my wife’s sister what happened to it, and she told her mom, and now I got a personal letter in the mail about how I don’t have a soul for doing that to the cat.
Did I do the right thing? Maybe I dont have a soul.. ![]()
The cat WAS neutered. That was the first attempt to stop the peeing.
He didn’t pee on clothes on the ground, our house brand new, and spotless. He would climb up the clothes hanging in my closet and piss down on them! All of the folded laudnry and everything.
FYI – My wife still doesn’t know what happened. She thinks he got out and ran away.
Our lives are much better now! I got rid of the stinky litter box, and we just had all of our rugs/carpets dry cleaned, and our house smells new again.
Thanks for all the answers. It looks like I made a bad choice.
What’s done is done. I’ll have to live with this forever.
Thanks…

Changes Taking Place In The Job market

Lucy is a fresh software engineering graduate. Like her batch mates, she too is scouring the Internet, college employment notice boards and the local newspapers for a job. She has not yet landed a job, but is hopeful of landing one soon. Her brother Mark is envious of her. He had passed out in 2001, when the software industry was reeling under the effect of the burst of the dotcom bubble. Luckily, for Lucy, the job market is much better now than what it was in 2001. Her friend, a liberal arts graduate is also hopeful of landing up a decent job. The reason is that the current job market is more vibrant and is offering a variety of jobs requiring different skill sets.
Today the job market requires people who are multi-talented and multi-skilled. Technology has played a big role in inventing such a need. Take the case of tax professionals. One of their basic jobs was to help the salaried class to fill out the details of their income tax return. With the availability of various user friendly tax calculating software, an increased number of people can now fill in their details without the need to consult a tax professional. This has seriously undermined the traditional role played by a tax consultant. The focus has now shifted to professionals who can deliver tax planning and advisory services according to individual needs.
A person aspiring to get a job in today’s market also has to be aware of different cultures and practices followed in various countries. The advent of the net has shrunk the entire world into a global village. A customer sitting in India can bag projects from clients in USA. In such a case it will be necessary for the Indian company to understand the needs and expectations of the American customer and deliver the projects accordingly. An Indian firm specializing in content writing has to use ‘color’ instead of ‘colour’ while delivering a project to a US client. Thus jobs nowadays require that a person should be well read and keep good knowledge of his immediate surroundings and also the world around him.
The advent of the Internet has also seen a large number of jobs being off shored to countries like India, South Africa etc. This also changes the work culture in these countries. Take the example of a call center; most of the call centers service American clients. The time difference between USA and India is about nine hours. In such a case, the Indian center will receive maximum calls after it is midnight in India. As a result the call centers have brought the culture of working in night shifts that was hitherto reserved to industries like manufacturing etc.
Another noticeable change taking place in the job market is that most of the jobs created are in the service sector. The United States Department of Labor for instance reported that education and health services added around 60,000 jobs in August and the finance and related sector created 26,000 jobs in US alone. This trend can be observed round the globe. As per a report that appeared in the Associated Press, service sector makes up for two-third of the US economy. Even in a developing country like India, the service sector has been the star performer. This is perhaps also a reason as to why the number of employees engaged in the service sector has shown a steady increase in the past decade. For e.g. as per ILO, the number of people employed in the service sector in the world has increased from 34.5% in 1995 to 38.9% in 2005. This is against the employment level in the industry sector that has remained stagnant at 21% between the periods from 1995-2005. The interesting fact to be noted is that females constitute 45% of the workforce in the service sector, which is higher than other sectors such as industry and agriculture.
Another noticeable change has been the increased participation of adult females in the workforce. For e.g. the share of employed adult males has seen a decline of 1.3% in the decade between 1995-2005. On the other hand, the share of females has increased from 51.7% in 1995 to 52.2% in 2005. It has also been noticed that the service sector has seen the largest share of working women. Females constitute 45% of the workforce in service sector.
Mergers and acquisitions are becoming the order of the day. Whether it is the bitter acquisition of Arcelor by the Mittal group or the Citigroup’s US$2.7 billiontakeover of KorAm bank in South Korea; the fact is that most of the mergers leads to job cuts. A report by outplacement firm Challenger, Gray and Christmas states that most of the tech job cuts can be attributed to mergers and acquisitions. The report puts the number of job loss due to mergers and acquisitions at 24,821 in 2006.
For e.g. according to World Economic Forum, UK labor force will start to shrink in 2010, declining further during the 2020s and only easing in the 2030s.
On the other hand, the World Economic Forum states that In India, on the other hand, the number of working-age people will increase by 335 million by 2030 – almost as much as the total working-age population of the EU and the United States combined in 2000.
The above-mentioned fact makes one thing clear: Expect a lot of migration and major upheaval in the job market in the years to come.
The job market is thus becoming more and more unpredictable. One has to possess many skills and be efficient in this age of cutthroat competition. Also, the skill set has to be continuously upgraded and updated to survive the onslaught of job cuts.

From Recruiting 101 To 102: Retaining Recruiters
Most of the time, the HR department of a typical corporation is working to keep its employees satisfied and working. Recruiters are busy searching for qualified applicants who could provide a host of benefits for the company and who are likely to ‘stick with it’ and invest in the future of the company. But what happens when it is the recruiter who is thinking about leaving?

Bad hires. You’ve heard the horror stories. But do you know the monetary consequences of hiring the wrong people for key positions within a company? According to a survey conducted in 2006 by career-consulting firm Right Management, the cost of hiring an employee who is not qualified to do their job can cost a company two and a half times their annual salary. If your company experienced two or three bad hires each year, the costs would be overwhelming.

TRAINING RECRUITERS TO SURVIVE IN CHINA
The passing of the Employment Contract Law, drafted by the National People’s Congress of China, will go into effect in 2008. The law, the first of its kind, allows the AFTCU (All-China Federation of Trade Unions) to have a say in many company policies including how employees are evaluated, termination of employees, and the procedures published in employee manuals. The law also restricts companies from laying off more than a certain number of employees at any one time.

Call Centers of Kathmandu—The Quiet Revolution Taking Place

By now the word ‘Call Center’ must have found its place in the lexicon of many people and specially for young people, working in a Call Center is a matter of pride. And Nepal might just be heading towards a new revolution in information technology. Who knows-only time will tell. It is better Nepal does not miss the IT bandwagon this time around. Our neighbouring country India has made a mark for itself in the software development and is unofficially called the ‘software capital of the world’.
Well here, I am not talking about software development, but rather an internet based work which can be produced, marketed and sold right there and then online-in a matter of minutes if you have the skill to sell. In fact the job is so much dependent on the convincing power of its agents who work as telemarketers that it could mean the very survival of the company. Here, the product for soliciting is a ‘website’ by telephoning business houses in countries like US, Australia, UK or Canada. Personally I think the Call Centers in Kathmandu should be called a telemarketing company because traditionally Call Centers handles inbound calls. Most Call Centers in Kathmandu are purely outbound which means that rather than waiting for the call from the other end, it goes out and gives a call first- a cold call in telemarketing term.
There are other players who make the Call Center tick like the web designers, programers, customer care, language trainers, and last but not the least the managers and directors because this is a business and management plays a big role. They should see that the right training is given to the agents and the rest as they say is hard work and perseverance. If you have the right foresight and goal the company could in a matter of short time turn profitable, as in any business start-ups it might take some time to settle down and reach a break even point. And there are a number of profitable Call Centers in Nepal already.
Now let’s go to the core of the matter and ask why this industry could prove to be very fruitful for Nepal? There are lot of young people who have good English here and highly educated. All you have to do is train them to be expert telemarketers. Obviously, things are not as easy as it sounds as training people to persuade clients to buy through telephone to a person thousands of miles away is in fact a very tall order. What’s more, you have to take their credit card (CC) information to bill them, and that itself turns out to be one of the biggest hurdle in the job.We don’t share CC information even with our best friends, let alone with a person who has phoned you for the first time in life. But there are agents who make sales in daily basis. It’s not impossible. So if you get your acts together, one can do it.
If you look at the current situation, there are a number of big Call Centers in Kathmandu who have been in business for more than five to ten years. And the good news is there are more Call Centers springing up in all corners of Kathmandu. Some have even started with a single room and a couple of computers, which shows that Nepalis are not far behind their western counterparts or even their big neighbours as an entrepreneur.
Normally a medium sized Call Center in Kathmandu has a monthly sales of around twenty to thirty thousand dollars worth of business, and say if we could increase this to a hundred thousand dollars with same human resources, it will be a big improvement, People are getting more enterprising and finding new ways to improve sales, so nothing is impossible. On the part of government, it should ensure that there is no interruption in power supply as currently Nepal is facing more than half a day of power cuts in winter. More should be done like creating conducive environment and where possible providing bank loans with minimum interest etc. If we had our way this sector could be the biggest employer for young people who are joining labour force for the first time. The possibilities are immense. Even if you don’t make it as a telemarketer you learn so much from this job, and personally I’d say everybody should be a telemarketer at least once in their life. You learn so much like sales technic and good communication skills that could be employed in other jobs if we decide to quit eventually
