Why do some people under estimate being a call center agent/customer service representative?

I don’t really know what’s wrong with being one..

Is this Legal under UK Labour Law?

I work at a Call centre called BPS Contact earning £6.35 per hour before taxes. My Duties as a Call centre agent is to recieve inbound calls which I then have to convert to sales for BPS.

What I have a bit of a gripe about is how we get paid, The system monitors how much of your shift that you were able to take calls. So It quantifies the exact amount of time you were physically logged into the system taking phone calls and that is what you get paid your hourly wage on.

This time that you are available to take incoming calls can differ wildly from the actual time that you were shifted to work for because of a number of different reasons, because of:

- Logging out to get a some water or go to the toilet
- Logging out to manually make an outbound call to an interested prospect
-Logging out due to faulty equipment and problems specific to your work station

So the crux of my question is: Is it illegal to pay your employees by another time frame other then the time scheduled on their work rota. Or is it valid for BPS contact to only pay us for the time that we were actually available to take calls and on the phones.
